“Chinese Fever: Liki-Liki is an installation made up of gold paper-cutouts that would take over the gallery walls,” artist Karen Tam notes. “Inspired by hand-painted export Chinese wallpaper, which was popular throughout Europe and North America in the 1700s, I hope to subvert some of these chinoiserie images with an undertone of indignation and violence, and to comment on current events and attitudes.” Opening reception takes place Friday, January 8, from 7-10pm. Artist will be in attendance. Open Tue-Sat 10am-4pm. Visit www.karentam.ca or www.wahc-museum.ca for more info.

"Karen Tam provides more biting commentary on the perception of Chinese restaurants - as well as such larger social issues as cheap labour - through the vernacular craft of paper cutting. Her messages are cleverly embedded within imageries of mythical creatures and figures, recreating familiar compositions for a modern audience."- Gigi Chang of Craft Magazine in response to the exhibit Pot Luck, Walsall, England
