This year we're lucky to have Halloween land on a Saturday, giving us a full day to rest up or prepare our costumes for a haunting night with all the other ghosts and ghouls.
Creepy Costumes
Because it is Halloween, you will likely require a costume. If you haven't been planning for months, slowly piecing together your costume in anticipation of the big night, you’ll need to do some catch-up work. A quick scan through my Facebook friends' status messages tells me that a lot of people still don't have a costume, so if you're still scratching your head you're not alone. You could, of course, blaze a path to a store that sells costumes, but this isn’t always the best option – especially at this time of year. Most of the best outfits have been picked over by this point and you may end up with the bargain bin options, or something even worse. People opt for this option are often the same bug-eyed people you see in the malls on Christmas Eve or paying through the nose for long stem roses at 5pm on February 14.
There may be a couple of obvious costumes lying around your house, but don't expect to win any contests. The most common is the bedsheet ghost costume. It's easy and quick, and all it costs is a set of bedsheets. Make sure to select a set that you won't be needing – winter is coming, after all. This costume is a bit of a cop-out and should only be used to gain free or discounted admission into an event. (Unless you go with the Charlie Brown option, of course, which may get a few nostalgic laughs.)
If there are no bedsheets around the house that you're willing to sacrifice, you may be able to build a costume from some items in your kitchen and bathroom. YouTube is a wealth of information for homemade wounds and makeup effects. There are also plenty of websites dedicated to this type of costume. Some zombie makeup may be easy way to put together a respectable costume. If you don't have any liquid latex lying around your house, there are some other ingredients that may be useful like tissue paper, Elmer's glue, wax and makeup.
