The Slew - 100%

It’s not often that the DJ and rock worlds collide in an explosive way; But 100% is the outcome of such an impact. The Slew is the creative brainchild of celebrated Canadian turntablist Kid Koala, who later recruited guitarist Dynomite D and the former rhythm section of the Australian band Wolfmother for help. The result is a fresh, funky perspective on rock music, complete with brash guitars, heavy bass, and danceable grooves.
The most appealing aspect of the album is unraveling the mystery of the various samples and their origins. Every repeated listen seems to bring new discoveries. On “Wrong Side of the Tracks,” the old song Catfish Blues is heard, seemingly with a sedate Jimi Hendrix singing it’s melody; While the even more elusive Hellbound Train—an ancient blues standard popularized by Chuck Berry—is one of the featured melodies at the end of “Southeast Soliloquy.” It is this mashing of different ideas into listenable songs that displays the albums strength.

This ingenious method of blending two distinct styles is sure to gain a musical foothold with fans of both genres. By mixing heavy rock riffs, with groovy beats and arcane lyrics, The Slew have managed to capture the spirit of rock and roll with the ingenuity of turntablism, while creating captivating and expressive songs.
